As part of the Healthy Food Choices in Schools Community of Practice, this course explores the problem of youth hunger from an academic and behavioral perspective and provides tips and resources for combating hunger in schools and school communities by increasing the access and appeal of nutritious foods as well as enacting more in-depth hunger reduction programs.

Upon the completion of this course the attendees will be able to:     
  • Explain the relationship between nutrition and learning ability, how hunger affects learning and behavior, and how school meals are integral to the core of the learning environment.
  • Describe how the psychology of choice relates to the school meal environment and identify simple ways that healthy foods can be promoted using the principles of visibility and convenience.
  • Understand the childhood food insecurity and hunger problem in the US and identify programs and resources that address student hunger outside of school.

As part of the Healthy Food Choices in Schools Community of Practice, this course introduces a free widely-used tool, the Smarter Lunchrooms Self Assessment Scorecard, for gauging the successes of healthy school food environments and identifying areas for improvement. Participants will get insights and step by step instructions for getting the most of the scorecard and its corresponding app. The course addresses how easy-to-implement lunchroom changes, including those listed in the scorecard, can increase consumption of healthy foods and decrease food waste.

Upon completion of the course participants in the course will be able to: 

  • Identify ways the Smarter Lunchroom Self-Assessment Scorecard can be used to evaluate food environments in schools and how to utilize those evaluations to identify and plan for positive changes. 
  • Download and use the Smarter Lunchroom Self-Assessment Scorecard application, LunchScore, to assess, evaluate, share, and compare school meal environments on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. 
  • Identify costs, benefits, and long-term potential of Smarter Lunchroom solutions for cafeteria tray waste and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Explain what the Healthy Children, Healthy Families program is and how it works.
  • Implement a fruit and vegetable challenge to reinforce classroom nutrition education and identify resources for additional replicable fruit and vegetable challenges.

The course also highlights some easy to implement best practices for marketing nutritious target foods to students, to increase school meal program participation.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to: 

  •  Use Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s tools and resources for planning a healthy child nutrition program including the Smart Snacks Product Calculator and Product Navigator. 
  • Define “local food,” locate potential local food suppliers, and adhere to school food procurement principles and regulations. 
  • Develop and enact marketing strategies that align with a nutrition plan that serves to nourish minds and bodies of students.

This course was developed by Ohio State University Extension.

This course will take you through the step by step process involved in reviewing 4-H curriculum. We will explore each criteria in the review process and discuss the standards for evaluating that criteria. We will conduct a similar exploration with for non-curriculum educational materials for which we also have a review process. Then we will explain the roles and responsibilities of becoming part of the national review team. Although intended for curriculum reviewers, this course can be a valuable tool for curriculum developers as well. Understanding the reviewers expectations and the review criteria will assist curriculum developers in designing great learning experiences.

4-H Healthy Living Collaborative Workspace is an online resource community for the 4-H Healthy Youth Initiative. Ages and Stages of Youth Development is a self directed course for 4-H Volunteers and School Age Child Care Professionals. The purpose of this course is to expose and educate 4-H volunteers and school-age professionals to the research and best practices surrounding the developmental levels of young people. Avian Influenza Biosecurity for Youth and 4-H members is a self-directed course designed for 9-19 year-olds and members of 4-H. provides strategies for school meal program leaders to identify and implement healthy initiatives, find funding to support those initiatives, and measure and communicate successes to students and other stakeholders in the community. This course has three video

We are excited to announce that the new QA Curriculum called Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is now active. Anyone who has not registered for the LQA online course for 2017 prior to 4/1/17 should now navigate to the NEW online YQCA course at yqca.learngrow.io. You will use your FAMILY 4HOnline login and password information to access the courses for the ACTIVE youth in your family.  Only ACTIVE members will show in the drop down menu for access to the course.   All registration questions with YQCA should be directed to help@yqca.org. There will not be local support for the YQCA program. All 4-Hers need to use the 4-H tab and not the FFA tab even if they are members of both organizations. There is a button for families that have forgotten their password. 4-Hers that have started their QA training in the LQA online course prior to 4/1/17 will be able to complete their modules and print off their certificate of completion and take it to their Extension Office. The YQCA site is user friendly and should make it easy for 4-H families to complete their QA training for this year.
